Interior Painting Tips
Buy a tack cloth (tack clothes are inexpensive and are a great tool to use for interior painting projects because they will help to clean whatever surface you plan on painting before you actually apply the paint; keep in mind that these are best used on trim pieces, cabinets, and doors, not so much on walls or ceilings)
Roller covers and large/wide paint brushes will be your best friend when it comes to painting large interior spaces; these tools will allow you to cover much more surface area with the paint you choose at a quicker rate and ends up saving lots of time in the process.
When it comes time to choose the paint for your home, keep in mind that darker colors can make a room look smaller and lighter colors can make a room look bigger (while we encourage taking risks with creativity, it is usually best to choose some kind of earthy color for the interior walls of a home so that it is calming to the eye and will still usually match with the rest of the colors in the decor of your home)
Purchase a high-quality paint brand to ensure the best results for your painting efforts.
Before applying the fresh paint, try doing a “duct tape test” on the current paint to see whether the new paint will hold and last throughout the years (this is done by applying a piece of the tape onto the old paint and then ripping it off, if large pieces come off, then it may be best to scrape off the old paint and sand it before proceeding)
Use masking film to cover materials in your surrounding painting area that you do not want the paint to get on.
Prime your walls before painting to ensure that the paint you choose will look great and last a long time.
Use painter’s tape to cover edges that you don’t want paint on (this will be removed once the painting is finished)
Use a wet edge to avoid overlapping the paint layers.
Clean your painting materials after the project is completed as soon as possible (dried paint is quite difficult to clean)
Exterior Painting Tips
Test for lead (kits can be bought for this)
Thoroughly clean the exterior of your home with a hose or pressure washer to get rid of any dirt or debris before applying any paint to your home (a mix of water and house cleaner should do the job nicely)
Scrape away any loose paint.
Sand down the area you plan on painting.
Fill any holes with putty.
Apply a generous layer of primer immediately after prepping the area (latex or oil-based primer work well).
Use caulking on all the joints to prevent water from going inside the house.
Choose the paint of your choosing, but latex paints usually work best for home exteriors because it is relatively easy to apply, it dries fast, and cleans up well with soap and water
Apply a top coat (one layer is enough for lighter colors but two or more layers are best for darker colors)
